In the Stillness of the Night   Leave a comment

In the stillness of the night,

when I cannot sleep yet,

thoughts fill my head;

I must not remain in bed.

No, to write is my imperative;

only after I have done that

can I rest and feel alright.

—–

The air conditioning system cools my home

and fills the space with a soft background sound.

It is all that separates me from silence,

so now, as the stillness and quiet I treasure,

I have no desire to roam–

only to remain still, to enjoy

the stillness I have found,

the stillness which I lose

when I go elsewhere.

The absence of this stillness

I find difficult to bear.
