Written for Randolph, & Long Used to Put Him to Sleep

Hush-a-bye, my baby,

Close your eyes in sleep.

Mother watches near thee–

Sleep, my baby, sleep.

Hush-a-bye, my baby,

Softly, sweetly sleep

While the white-robed angels

Loving vigils keep.

Over thee, my darling,

Snowy wings they spread;

Though unseen they’re ever

Round they cradle-bed.

Best of all our Father

Sleepless watch doth keep;

Day and night he guards thee;

Sleep, my baby, sleep.
