Take comfort, my feral feline neighbors,

mother Crystal and daughter Leslie,

for you are my favorite two creatures;

this has become our reality.

+++++

That you stretch out and curl up, even sleep

at my back door makes me quite happy.

I understand why distance you still keep

from human beings, even from me,

+++++

but at least you have become more present

(and more often) than previously.

Your visibility alone has meant

a great deal to my darling and me.

Cats Poem Original

The final draft is below.

Crystal, Pat, and Leslie,

feline neighbors feral,

whom I feed and gladly

watch through my rear windows

+++++

Crystal, the protective

mother, guards kittens cute;

one child is all white;

the other wears a suit

+++++

of fur black and white.

The babies romp outdoors;

all consume many a bite

of feline food courses–

+++++

fish, dry food, and canned food.

They drink fresh water too.

My caring attitude

tells me what I should do

+++++

for these creatures of God

who, although they never

will be pets, to I nod

and resolve to pamper.

O most noble wearers of fur,

with whom we humans live but whom we never own,

you are creatures we seek after,

the greatest we have ever known.

+++++

You are most skilled people trainers,

adept in the ways of behavior modification;

your training of us seems as entertaining

ways; we need an education.

+++++

Dogs, some say, are man’s best friends,

even the best friends in Washington,

but cats, I know, to us also attend

quite well, giving sincere attention.

+++++

Some say that you are aloof,

as if that manner is bad;

but I say that an honest cat, even one on a roof,

can be a true friend–not a cad.

+++++

So I praise you, noble felines,

as you stretch and as you curl

up; you I cannot malign;

your flag I do unfurl.

Sitting With a Cat   Leave a comment

Above:  A Calico Cat

A self-possessed feline

Sits on my lap,

Purrs,

And seems content

While I pet her gently.

=====

This time is good

For both of us.

=====

The cat,

A wonderful creature of God,

And I

Help each other.

=====

I look into her eyes.

How does she think of me?

What does she think of me?

We two,

Members of different species–

How well do we understand each other?
