EDITOR’S COMMENT:

I have two words–baptismal regeneration–for my great-grandfather.  But I am close to Roman Catholicism–a faith tradition he condemned–and he considered baptismal regeneration heretical.  C’est la vie.

1 Peter 3, 15

I.

“Without him was not anything made.”  Hence his Sovereign authority.  Creation invests him with the right to rule.

II.

He is also the Author of a new creation–the regenerated heart.  He redeems man.  He is the Lord of heaven and earth.   We are his new creation.

III.

We should so recognize him and by a supreme act make him Lord of heart and life.

(1)  Lord of the intellect, of all we think, pure, wholesome thinking.  Consecrate to him the powers of our minds.  We need him as an anchor of all our thinking.

(2)  Lord of our wills.  Sin is the anarchist of the soul.  we need to surrender the will to Christ.  This adjusts and oils life’s machinery.  “‘Tis best to let him have his way with thee.”

(3)  Lord of the emotions.  Satan would stir up evil passions.  Jesus would purify and rule them in righteousness and love, that holy emotions and desires for and pleasures in that which is good.

Bring forth the royal diadem

and crown him Lord of all.

Christ As Lord in the Heart   1 comment

1 Peter 3, 15

1.  See that the heart is His temple, prepared for his indwelling and dedicated to Him.  Let Him dwell there richly by faith.

2.  Enthrone Him as Lord:

(a)  Of thy afflictions.  Love him supremely.  Let Him regulate and dominate all–love only what He loves & approves.

(b)  Subject the will to Him.  “Thy will be done as in heaven so in earth.”  Be “willing and obedient.”  He wills our highest possible good; let Him direct in all things.

(c)  Reverence Him, worship Him, magnify Him, exalt Him.  He is Lord of heaven and earth; let Him be Lord of thy whole life.

3.  He will be thy sufficiency in all things.  In having Him you have your highest blessing and He will supply “these other things.”  The heart will find rest and strength in Him.  Then no matter how much is exacted of you, you will be ready to give a reason of the hope that is in you.

1 Peter 3, 13 (Revised Version)

1.  God created all things; hence He is Sovereign of all things.  Creation invests Him with the right to rule.

2.  Jesus Christ is creator of a new and greater creation–the heart of man.  He, by His death, redeems man.  This invests Him of right Lord of heaven & earth–of all men.

3.  Man should so recognize Him and make Him Lord over the heart and life.

Make Him Lord:

(1)  Of the intellect.  He alone is man’s pilot.  In all one’s thinking an anchor is sorely needed.  Christian education alone is safe!

(2)  Of the emotions.  Satan stirs up evil passions.  Jesus will purify and rule them in righteousness–will give holy emotions, desires for a pleasure in all that is good.

(3)  Of the will.  Sin is the anarchist of the soul.  Surrender the will to Jesus Christ.  This adjusts and oils life’s machinery.  “‘Tis best to let him have his way with thee.”

(4)  Of others that they may be led to crown Him Lord of all.

The Christ of Sovereign Authority   8 comments

Christ Pantocrator

Matt. 28, 18

Jesus took our nature (sin excepted) with its weaknesses upon himself to reach and and save us.  He won his place by the suffering he endured.  Now the Father hath exalted him to the first place in all the universe!  All authority is his.

1.  Has authority over the Angels.  They cast their crowns at his feed and gladly do his bidding.  (1 Peter 3, 22)

2.  Hath authority over the church to direct all of its affairs forever.  “Is head over all things to the church which is his body”–see Rev. 1, 12-18; Eph. 5, 25-27; Acts 13, 2-5, Dan. 7, 13-14.

3.  Power or authority to forgive sin.  Such is His sovereign right (Mk 2, 10-12).  Without this He is a colossal failure.  If he is Divine of course He can.  Many are witnesses that He does.  He dominates devils, cast them out.

4.  Authority to execute judgment also (Jno. 5, 22).  Will decide the destiny of every soul at last.  His pierced hand shall open the gate of peal to admit his children; and shall close if against the finally impenitent (Matt. 25, 34, 41, 46).

5.  Have you yielded to Him or do you dare hold out against Him, whose blessing is offered now?
