Devotedness to Christ

Jno. 11, 16

I.

Thomas knew of the opposition to Jesus at Jerusalem.  He verily believed it meant death to Jesus for him to return to Judea.  But Jesus went to help the sorrowing.

II.

Thomas’ love for Jesus was stronger than life.  He resolved to go with him and called upon the other disciples to go also.  What a beautiful devotion was his.

III.

Jesus calls us, as he had called them, to follow him, to learn of him, and to do his bidding, walk with him in service to others.  “He went about doing good.”  This was his “meat”–Jno. 4. 24.  “I am among you as he that serveth”–Lk. 22, 27.

“By love serve one another”–Gal. 5, 13.  “For ye serve the Lord Christ”–Col. 3, 24.

Great joy in serving him by doing good to others.  It helps a soul find peace to assist one in need.

IV.

But are we only fair-weather Christians?  Shall we not, like Thomas, go with him ever facing danger and sacrifice?  Is he not dearer than all else?  Suffering for Christ’s sake may not be easy, but it is far better to suffer with him than to dwell at ease without him.

May our hearts be brave to walk close to his side whatever may come.  Then all will be well and we shall triumph at last.

EDITOR’S COMMENT:

This document comes with a clue:  “9.23. p.m.”  From 1938 to 1942 (the timeframe for this set of sermon notes, according to evidence I have mentioned elsewhere), September 23 never fell on a Sunday.  It did, however, fall on a Wednesday in 1942, according to online sources.

I.

The will of God is the law of heaven and earth.  He is Creator, Preserver and Judge of all.  “What is his will?” the proper question.

Jesus recognized the Father’s will in all his life–it was constantly before him.  He will do nothing contrary to it.

II.

Jesus knew he was sent of the Father.  “As the Father hath sent me.”  “I came…not to do mine own will.”  A mighty purpose moved God to send him and he must be about the things of his Father.

III.

He is to accomplish (finish) his work–the salvation of the world.  What if he had turned from it?

IV.

His mission involved suffering and death.  Otherwise he could not have saved the world.

It is necessary to endure suffering yet men do it especially when it is for a great cause.  “He shall see of the travail of his soul and be satisfied.”

V.

“My meat is to do his will.”  It refreshes my heart like food nourishes the body.  How delightful to help others–Jesus found joy in helping this woman and others as well.

May we find our chief joy in doing God’s holy will.

I.

Jesus found a great opportunity at the well–to lead a woman into the knowledge of the truth and through her to reach many in the village.  How his heart must have thrilled at it.  What a fine service it was!

II.

My meat to will of the Father.  He was sent “to seek and to save the that which was lost.”  The Father directed him daily and he pleased the Father.

III.

“Had to finish his work.”  Not that there was no more to do after he ascended, but to finish the work he gave me to do.  Well he is still working at it through the church.  In every age there is much to do.

IV.

We face a great work and it needs to be done.  Should we neglect it–the church of our day–God will seek elsewhere for someone to do it.

It is the Father’s cause–his work–and he calls us to do it for him.  It should be our meat to do it.
