EDITOR’S COMMENT:

My great-grandfather’s use of “Jehovah” places him in time.  The American Standard Version of the Bible (1901) makes frequent use of that term, for example.  That term has fallen out of use in many circles, with “the LORD” of “Yahweh” taking its place most frequently.  For example, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, in its 1973 hymnal, The Book of Psalms for Singing, uses “Jehovah” frequently.  Yet the denomination’s 2010 hymnal, The Book of Psalms for Worship, replaces “Jehovah” with other terms, usually “the LORD.”  (Aside:  I do find having a collection of hymnals helpful for research purposes.)  Nevertheless, on my way to church each Sunday, I drive past the building of a congregation which calls itself “Jehovah’s Temple.”  I guess they did not get the memo.

I note also that my great-grandfather had read up on developments in Christology during the first five centuries of Christianity.

Matt. 16, 16

Christian view:  two natures, humanity born of a virgin & died; divinity which was united with the humanity very and eternal God, in essence equal and one with the Father, truly & properly God.

I.

Titles:  they can apply only to God

(1)  Jehovah,  Ex. 3, 14–“I am that I am,” the highest name of God.  Isa. 40, 5–“the glory of Jehovah shall be revealed.”  In Matt. 3, 3, this is applied to Christ viz:  “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.”

(2)  Lord of glory:  “Had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Cor. 2, 8).

(3)  “God”–Jno. 1, 1; Lord of hosts…the God of Jacob–Ps. 46, 7.  In Heb. 1, 8 this is applied to Christ.

(4)  Son of God:  “I saw and bare record that this is the Son of God” (Jno. 1, 34).  And unclean spirits…cried saying, “Thou art the Son of God” (Mk. 3, 11).  “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3, 17).

(5)  “God with us”–Emmanuel.  Matt. 1, 23, “God over all.”  “Christ who is over all God blessed for ever” (Rom. 9, 5).

“God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into Glory” (1 Tim. 3, 16).  “And we know that the true Son of God is come.  This is the true God” (1 Jno. 5, 20).

Angels bear witness:

A Saviour (Matt. 1, 21); “Son of the Highest” (Lk. 1, 32); “Christ the Lord” (Lk. 2, 11).

II.

His attributes prove he is God:  All that are applied to God are applied to Christ–Eternity, Immutability, Omnipotence, etc.

Consciousness of his nature

III.

His works prove him Divine:  Creation, Preservation, Pardon of sin, Miracles, Judgment

We baptize and dismiss the congregations in his name, pray in his name and the Father hears us.

The mighty Lord from heaven, the Saviour of sinners

“If ever man was God or God man, Jesus Christ was both.”–Byron

“If Jesus Christ is a God

And the only God, I swear

I will follow him thro’ heaven and hell,

The earth, the sea, the air.”–Gilder

“Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.

Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.

Hail, great Galiean!–Great God.”–Woods

Mother Mary, whose soul magnifies

the Lord, who treads the adder,

who reigns as Queen of Heaven,

you I thank whenever I rise

and think of the love of the Father

evident in Christ’s incarnation.

Mother Mary, your faithfulness

and strength I do ponder,

for you raised a unique Son.

That must have been a great mess

at time, but, based on the Master,

you did indeed get the job done.

the bounds of our imaginations often;

reality proves more wonderful than

that which we ponder, of which we read.

The glory of God we ought not soften

or minimize; it we cannot fully understand.

EDITOR’S COMMENT:

I detect some overgeneralizations here.  These were especially common prior to 1950s biblical scholarship, so they mark my great-grandfather as being of his time.  I recognize (thanks to 1950s forward biblical scholarship, the variety in first-century CE Palestinian Judaism–Judaisms, perhaps–and with it, the range of Messianic expectations from none to spiritual to political.  (I belong to a group that reads scholarly works regarding the historical Jesus and meets monthly.  Now I know more than I imagined that I might and wonder how much more I will know eventually.)

Nevertheless, there is much good content here.

Matt. 11, 6

1.  Christ was crucified because men were disappointed in Him.  They expected a political Messiah, as such as he would have been a bitter disappointment.  Disappointment may have entered into the treachery of Judas.

2.  These examples have many parallels or successors today.

(a)  Some want only a teacher of ethics, as did Thomas Jefferson.

(b)  Others will have only a political reformer.

Because of these delusions they are offended in Him though he is the Christ they need.

3.  The predominating idea of Christ is that He is a Saviour (Matt. 1, 21).  This is His real mission.  But the carnal mind is least inclined to accept Him as such.

He is more to the world as Saviour than as a reformer or teacher.  He will yet take this old world by his power.  All nations shall yet come unto Him; why not then be satisfied with Him?

4.  Again let us think, what will become of those who reject Him?  “Lord, to whom can we go?”

5.  By clinging to Him we find our all.  He has the grace we need.  It is He that holdeth our crowns in his hands.  It is to him [that] we must look to bring us all home to heaven at last.

Pardon and Cleansing   5 comments

1 Jno. 1, 9

1.  All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (1 Jno. 1, 8 & 10).  This is the why of Christ’s death and of offered mercy.

2.  But Jesus Christ is a Saviour from sin (Matt. 1, 21).  He earnestly desires all men to be saved.  Hence he calls them to repent and believe Him.

3.  If we confess and forsake our sins He will forgive us.  This repentance must be the giving up of every sin though as dear as a night eye.  “Who confesseth and forsaketh his sins shall have mercy.”  Wonderful is this deliverance from guilt–condemnation, without which we are forever lost.

4.  But does He stop here?  Does He leave the heart in the same sinful state, only imputing to the penitent sinner the righteousness of Christ, and really not changing the heart, only pardoning the guilt?  If so why the last clause of the text?  “If any man be in Christ he is a new creature?–all new.  Men are promised a new heart and the gift of the Spirit–Ezek. 36, 25.  Else what is the new birth.  Pardons & regenerates is the scriptural doctrine of conversion.  Heb. 2, 17 & 9, 14.  1 Jno. 3, 5.  Rev. 1, 5.
