EDITOR’S COMMENT:

My great-grandfather’s use of “Jehovah” places him in time.  The American Standard Version of the Bible (1901) makes frequent use of that term, for example.  That term has fallen out of use in many circles, with “the LORD” of “Yahweh” taking its place most frequently.  For example, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, in its 1973 hymnal, The Book of Psalms for Singing, uses “Jehovah” frequently.  Yet the denomination’s 2010 hymnal, The Book of Psalms for Worship, replaces “Jehovah” with other terms, usually “the LORD.”  (Aside:  I do find having a collection of hymnals helpful for research purposes.)  Nevertheless, on my way to church each Sunday, I drive past the building of a congregation which calls itself “Jehovah’s Temple.”  I guess they did not get the memo.

I note also that my great-grandfather had read up on developments in Christology during the first five centuries of Christianity.

Matt. 16, 16

Christian view:  two natures, humanity born of a virgin & died; divinity which was united with the humanity very and eternal God, in essence equal and one with the Father, truly & properly God.

I.

Titles:  they can apply only to God

(1)  Jehovah,  Ex. 3, 14–“I am that I am,” the highest name of God.  Isa. 40, 5–“the glory of Jehovah shall be revealed.”  In Matt. 3, 3, this is applied to Christ viz:  “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.”

(2)  Lord of glory:  “Had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Cor. 2, 8).

(3)  “God”–Jno. 1, 1; Lord of hosts…the God of Jacob–Ps. 46, 7.  In Heb. 1, 8 this is applied to Christ.

(4)  Son of God:  “I saw and bare record that this is the Son of God” (Jno. 1, 34).  And unclean spirits…cried saying, “Thou art the Son of God” (Mk. 3, 11).  “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3, 17).

(5)  “God with us”–Emmanuel.  Matt. 1, 23, “God over all.”  “Christ who is over all God blessed for ever” (Rom. 9, 5).

“God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into Glory” (1 Tim. 3, 16).  “And we know that the true Son of God is come.  This is the true God” (1 Jno. 5, 20).

Angels bear witness:

A Saviour (Matt. 1, 21); “Son of the Highest” (Lk. 1, 32); “Christ the Lord” (Lk. 2, 11).

II.

His attributes prove he is God:  All that are applied to God are applied to Christ–Eternity, Immutability, Omnipotence, etc.

Consciousness of his nature

III.

His works prove him Divine:  Creation, Preservation, Pardon of sin, Miracles, Judgment

We baptize and dismiss the congregations in his name, pray in his name and the Father hears us.

The mighty Lord from heaven, the Saviour of sinners

“If ever man was God or God man, Jesus Christ was both.”–Byron

“If Jesus Christ is a God

And the only God, I swear

I will follow him thro’ heaven and hell,

The earth, the sea, the air.”–Gilder

“Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.

Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.

Hail, great Galiean!–Great God.”–Woods

Christ and the Church   1 comment

Matt. 16, 18

I.  Christ founded the church.  “I will build my church.”  It is as unique among the institutions in the world as he is unique among men.  He is working at this enterprise every day.

II.  “Upon this rock.”  Not uttered until Peter made this great confession–till he expressed faith in Christ as the Son of God.  Here we have:  On the Divine side Christ the Son of God.  No church without him.  On the human side faith in him.  Without faith there is no church.  So faith in Christ is the the “rock.”

III,  Its mission–to bear witness of Him and so lead men to believe on him and devote themselves to his service.

(a)  To call men to repentance and faith–into fellowship with him.

(b)  To administer the things of grace–the sacraments.  It lives to serve men, to help them work out their salvation.

IV.  It has not failed–has produced millions of Christian characters.

V.  Its future is secure.  He lives and “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”  He carries on his work from age to age.

Matt. 16, 24-27

1.  Jesus announces that each one who would follow Him must bear his own cross.

(a)  “Deny himself”–his own selfish will.

(b)  “And follow me,” the lowly one.

For:

2.  Whosoever would save his (natural) life shall lose it (his spiritual life).  The former wars against the latter.  Something must be given up; which shall it be?  The soul’s life and its graces are what we pay for worldly enjoyment.  The price is too great.

3.  “What is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and forfeit his life?  The soul is too dear a price to pay for the whole world, not to say a small portion.  For it all can’t redeem the soul.  Its redemption is indeed precious.

4.  “The Son of man” will come in judgment and reward every man according to his deeds.

To the crossbearers he will grant a crown of righteousness; to the crossspurners he will assign as their due shame and everlasting contempt.

Which will you do, bear the cross for Him or spurn it for self?

EDITOR’S COMMENT:

If I read item #3 correctly, it is a reference to the doctrine of Christian Perfection, something I did not affirm when I was a Methodist.  And now that I am an Anglo-Lutheran-Catholic Episcopalian, I still reject it.  Yet perhaps I am misinterpreting that item.

Matt. 16, 18

Jesus gladly endorses Peter’s confession.  He knows it only by revelation in answer to faith.  Now Christ has found faith in Himself and can found his ecclesia.

1.  The foundation is Christ.  He founded it on faith in Himself.  He is the chief cornerstone.  Save for Him there would be no church.  He is the inspiration of its work and worship.  His place in the church is secure.  It is hopelessly committed to Him.  He sits on high sending messages to the churches and dispensing the fullness of his grace to it.

2.  The character of the church is social.  It is amongst men–social beings–and for their good.  Hence [it] seeks those conditions that will be most helpful.  This is sufficient authority for the adoption of any expedient.

Different branches exert a helpful influence upon each other.  All may be Israel though of different tribes.  It uses ritual only for spiritual means.

3.  Its destiny.

The perfection of character.  A perfect man [is] the highest product of the gospel and all may be such.

But he who said the gates of death should not prevail, bade the church give the gospel to all the world.  Christ through the church shall yet take this old world and heaven will sing harvest home.

In item #1 my great-grandfather wrote:

The foundation is Christ.

Then he placed an asterisk by “Christ.”  There is a matching asterisk at the bottom of the page.  At this second asterisk are these words:

Matt. 16, 18

Man needs such a community of interest for his spiritual good.

I.

Ecclesia–congregation assembled for business.  “Called out” from others.  Christ is the head:  He loved the church.

II.

Divine:

(1)  In origin.  “I will found my church.”  Not of man.  Is the one divine institution.

(2)  In its operations–weapons are not carnal.  “Put up thy sword.”  Uses material things but only for spiritual results.

(3)  In its object–to seek and save the lost.  Not a community selfishly seeking its own; but trying to raise up to the cross of Christ.

III.

(1)  Being thus divine, the great Head concerns himself for it.  Men may not; he cares much for her prosperity.  [He] walks among the candlesticks, holds the seven stars, and sends messages to the churches.

(2)  He accepts service for her as done for himself and so rewards it; for so it is.  Gave himself for it and is pleased that we do likewise.

The Resurrection of Jesus   3 comments

1 Cor. 15, 12-19

1.  As his death was part of a divine plan so was his resurrection.  “I have power…to take it again.”  “This commandment received I.”  (Jno. 10, 18, also Jno. 2, 19-22 & Matthew 16, 4)  He must master even death–all of man’s enemies.

2.  Its importance can hardly be overestimated.  Paul stakes all on this fact.  It establishes all other Christian doctrine.  Man rejected & crucified him, the Father owns and approves him by raising him.

If he be not raised there follows:

(1)  Vanity of preaching; it “is vain”

(2)  Emptiness of faith–it “is vain”

(3)  Falsehood of testimony–“false witnesses”

(4)  Failure of redemption–“Ye are yet in your sins”

(5)  Collapse of hope–“They also that are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.”

3.  The witnesses to his resurrection are emphatic and had no motive to testify to a delusion or falsehood, but the reverse.  It is what saved them from despair and fired their hearts to endure all things for the sake of their testimony.

Our own proof is the presence of the Holy Spirit in the world.

4.  He lives to intercede for me and to give me and all men victory over sin and the grave.

Because he lives I shall live also, and be with him where his is.
