Matt. 5, 16

Phils. 2, 15

I.

The lighthouse stands above in its place on the shore, amid calm and storm despite the gales.  It must be strong.

II.

Nothing can take its place.  It marks a certain danger point that seamen may be warned.  It is needed right where it is.

III.

At night its light shines.  That is its business.  Thereby many lives and much property are saved.

IV.

Christians are lighthouses.  Their light is derived from Christ, the original source of spiritual light and truth.

(a)  The place they occupy is important.  They should be true to Christ despite all opposition.

(b)  It is our business to let our light shine.  “Men do not light a candle and put it under a bushel,” but on a candlestick.

(c)  Thereby many are saved from going astray.

“Among whom ye shine as lights in the world.”

It is for Him we are to shine.  What a privilege!

Matt. 5, 13-16

I.

The church [is] the main factor in maintaining high values and their application to mankind.  [They are] especially needed in a time of world upheaval.

II.

A light-house–keeps alive and holds aloft the flame of truth and love and righteousness.  Jesus is the Light of the world and the church carries that light int the darkened places and lives of men.

III.

The channel through which divine power is transmitted to others.  This power to uplift men to high living is indispensable.

IV.

A citadel standing like a rock against the tides of evil which would dethrone God and drag men down to the lowest pit.  “Let us hold to what good we have and make it better.”

V.

It is a house by the side of the road ministering to the careworn, heart-sick, and afflicted, lifting the fallen and protecting the defenseless.

Valuable?  Beyond measure!

The Passion for God

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Matt. 5, 6

I.

The difference in men is in their motives, their longings, which color the whole life–something outranks all else.

The heart is a kingdom with some sovereign passion–that which receives [the] most thought & endeavor, gives the highest pleasure.

II.

Jesus says the man who hungers after righteousness is blessed–has a passion for God.  Religion is the autocrat of the heart.  Christ demands the first place in the heart.

(a)  A good appetite indicates a healthful body.  A hungering for God shows soundness of spirit.  The most religious strive after God more than any others.  This is the only life worthy the powers of the soul.

(b)  The passion for worldly pleasures while the church work languishes reveals a bad state of the heart–a loss of healthful appetite.  Such things can never satisfy the soul.

III.

Those who yearn after God and obey him are filled with peace and joy, are satisfied with him alone.

IV.

How may we have this warmth of affection?  By letting in the warmth of his love.

O for a yearning after God!

Luke 16, 23

Matt. 5, 29-30

Mark 9, 43-48

1.  Certainty of hell–Christ’s words.

2.  Who goes there?  The finally unrepentant.

3.  Nature of its punishment:

(1)  Banishment from God–“Depart.”  “These shall go away.”

(2)  Remorse of conscience–sense of guilt.  “Their worms dieth not.”

(3)  Sensibility of pain–“I am tormented in this flame.”

(4)  Sight.  Lost in sight of heaven.

(5)  Bottomless pit.  Sin plunges one deeper and deeper into ruin.  [Editor’s aside:  Someone–I do not know who or when–has marked through this item with a pencil.]

(6)  Associates–The wicked of all the ages–this is an awful hell itself.

(7)  Lake of unquenchable fire.  See Rev. 14, 10-11; 20, 10; 21, 8.

What depth of suffering and despair is in these several elements combined!

4.  How long shall this last?  Mat. 25, 46, etc.

God save us from such an awful doom!

EDITOR’S COMMENT:

I, for the sake of clarity, point out that my great-grandfather used the word “professor” to refer to one who professes something, not a person who teaches at a college or a university.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Last January I attended a lesbian wedding; the ceremony was at a church building.  It was a lovely rite and the couple is wonderful.  My great-grandfather would have kvetched endlessly.  He would also object to the fact that the officiating priest was female.  He would probably have called all of us deluded apostates.

My great-grandfather used the word “professor” to mean “one who professes,” not one who teaches at a college or university.

Matt. 5, 13-16

I.

1.  History demonstrates the downward tendency of character, e.g., the antediluvians, the Israelites under Moses, and their kings.  All earthly movements and civilizations manifest this weakness.

2.  In such a world the church is the one great conservative, restraining power.  It brings a gospel antagonizing all sin and quickening the conscience, offering grace to all.  Christianity has been this force.

3.  If only salt would keep its saltness.  This calls for the most diligent, personal effort.  But delusions and apostasies have come, e.g., the times of Luther & Wesley.  Losing its savour it is useless, harmful.

Yet its restraining power is prevented sometimes by professors & parents who come between it and their children, etc.

II.

1.  But the church must also quicken the dead & almost dead by giving the gospel light to all–aggressive Christianity.

2.  To do this no one should obscure or hide his light by a bushel–timidity, fear, wrong deeds.

It shines best in good works, not mere words.

3.  The desired end of it all is that men may be induced to glorify God.  This should regulate all the life and be uppermost in one’s desire.
