EDITOR’S NOTE:

(1)  My great-grandfather’s analysis of divorce rates in Christian homes might have been accurate in his day (he retired in 1945 and died eleven years later).  In 2014, however, his analysis does not apply.

(2)  This is a sermon from World War II, hence the reference to war and peace in the third section.

Rom. 14, 19

I.

Much is said of peace in the Scriptures.  God is author of peace, not of strife.  He implanted the love of peace in the human heart.  The prophets had a beautiful vision of the reign of peace, foretold the coming of the Prince of Peace.

II.

Jesus is the Prince of Peace.  It is his legacy to the world.  “Peace on earth, good will to men.”–“to men of good will.”  “Peace I leave with you.”  “Let the peace of God rule (arbitrate) in your hearts.”

(1)  Peace rules in the Christian house.  Prayerful homes not broken by divorce–almost never.

(2)  Christian principles help nations live together in peace-e.g. Canada and the U.S.  If they can, why not others also; yea all others?

III.

Christians today [are] much concerned that we shall have a permanent peace after this war.  They insist that all of us do something about it now, that we let our Congressmen and Senators know we want to U.S. to unite with other nations to prevent war.  Maybe this is God’s way of helping to banish war.  What a great blessing it will be.

Let God’s people speak out now, lest we get there too late with too little.

Salvation Urged Upon You   2 comments

Acts 13, 26

1.  The “word,” or message is “sent”–not from man, though, sent by him, but from God.  As the Amazon could not flow from an island; so such a word of life could not come from man.  It is an inspired–God-given–message.  It concerns man’s spiritual state & destiny.  Man repeats it under divine influence and power of the Spirit.

2.  Its control is “salvation.”

(1)  This is man’s great need; and

(2)  God’s concern for us.

(3)  It is a present salvation of pardon.  “Peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.”  (Romans 14, 17)

(4)  It is an eternal Salvation of final deliverance and bliss.  He will perfect His work in us if we are faithful.

3.  It is sent to “you.”  It is an intensely personal matter.  You are urged to accept it–not to make light of it, to treat it as a small matter.  God moves mightily to help you.

Will you not accept it?  Do you dare neglect it?

The Overcoming Church   2 comments

EDITOR’S NOTE:

My great-grandfather wrote:

Religion is a mater of personal experience.  (Rom. 14, 17)  This made them invincible.  They knew his power to save.  Revivals come by emphasizing experience, not dogma or ritual.  This has always been the peculiar power of Methodism and her mission.  Movements that emphasize something else fail.

The example of the Oxford Movement (1800s) disproves his main argument.

And I am an ardent ritualist.

Rev. 12, 11

John is banished to Patmos “for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus (Ch. 1, 9).  But he is given a vision of the Son of Man, hears the songs of the angels, and is shown things to come.  He sees the conflict of the witnessing church with Satan.  The Church conquers.  How?

1.  “By the blood of the Lamb.”  “Of God that taketh away the sin of the world.”  They have greater power than man alone possesses.  His blood has power to cleanse and keep all who come to him, no matter who opposes.  “These…have washed their robes and made them white through the blood of the Lamb.”

2.  “And the word of their testimony.”  “Wish the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”  Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.  “We are witnesses.”  The witnessing church invincible.  Testimony arrests attention.  It is always needed.

3.   “And they loved not their lives unto the death.”  They “counted not their lives dear unto them,” but devoted themselves to his cause at any cost.

The serpent rages so that they must endure as seeing him who is invisible.  They must suffer for the right.

(a)  Religion is a mater of personal experience.  (Rom. 14, 17)  This made them invincible.  They knew his power to save.  Revivals come by emphasizing experience, not dogma or ritual.  This has always been the peculiar power of Methodism and her mission.  Movements that emphasize something else fail.

(b)  What a call is here to heroic living and high endeavor.  Would that we might be worthy of them in experience and service too.

4.  No wonder John saw the Church conquering.  Such soldiers are invincible.  Satan’s kingdom shall be demolished and Jesus shall establish his kingdom upon its ruins.  Then Hallelujah, for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Typing this post while listening to the Dies Irae from Verdi’s Requiem is most appropriate.  It is what I am doing.  It is also ironic, given my great-grandfather’s negative attitude regarding anything related to Roman Catholicism.

Rev. 20, 12

1.  The propriety of such a day is seen from the fact that man does not always get justice from government.  Providence would suggest it too to even up matters that appear unequal here.

2.  Its certainty is emphatic.  (Heb. 9, 27 & Acts 17, 31)

3.  Who is to preside–Jesus Christ.  (Rom. 14, 10; 2 Cor. 5, 10)

4.  Time–no man knows but to many will be unexpected.

5.  Who will be there?  All men of every age, you and I must appear.  ‘Twere vain to call for rocks & mountains to fall on us and hide us from His presence.

6.  Strict account shall be taken of every deed, thought and word.  There shall be revealed characters, consciences and secrets as they are.

7.  A line is drawn separating the evil from the good, husband and wife, parent and child, are forever separated.  God shall banish the rejected ones, but welcome his own to Himself to enjoy the bliss of heaven.

Are you ready to meet Him?

Daniel Refuses to Defile Himself   2 comments

Dan. 1, 8

I.

What defiles a man?

(1)  What God forbids–sin.

(2)  What violates one’s conscience.  See Rom. 14, 4

II.

Daniel determined not to defile himself with the king’s meat.  He took his religion with him even to Babylon.  He would not take the risk. His conscience demanded that course.  It was safe.

III.

Not only his conduct, but also his motive was right.  Conduct should spring from pure motive–single eye.  Both right conduct outwardly and right purpose within should characterize our lives.

IV.

God blessed him in his course.  He always signally blesses those who dare to do the right when the currents are strong in the opposite direction.

Influence   2 comments

Rom. 14, 7

1.  Everyone has an influence over others whom he touches in life.  We are conscious of the atmosphere of another’s life and presence.  We are social beings and help to make up our brother’s world.

2.  Whether it is helpful or hurtful influence depends upon one’s life.  Corrupt tree, corrupt fruit.  Sinful life, hurtful influence; righteous life, helpful influence.  “Numbers tend to make a cause strong; Numbers and character do make a strong cause.”

3.  To live in sin is bad enough, to lead another into it is far worse.  To go to Hell is inexpressibly horrible; to drag down others too is infinitely worse.  Hence the hurt of evil associates is seen.  Bad company is a terror.  “One sinner destroyeth much good.”  It stops not when one dies.  1 Tim. 5, 24-25

4.  Every true Christian helps the cause of right, making it easier for others to live right.

5.  God will reward us some day for our influence.  The hurt or good we have done will not be forgotten, for whether we live or die we are the Lord’s.  Be sure the life is right.
