The swastika was originally one of many variations on the Christian cross.  It was, in particular, a form of the cross on the Indian Subcontinent.  I have seen pre-World War I sets of Rudyard Kipling books in the homes of some people for whom I have house-and-pet sat.  The spines had swastikas on them.  Since there were no Nazis in 1911, the swastika here is an innocent symbol.

Now, of course, the swastika is a ruined and corrupted symbol.
