EDITOR’S NOTE:

The proper English-language interpretation of the Tetragammaton with vowels is “Yahweh,” not “Jehovah,” which is a Medieval creation.  My great-grandfather therefore erred when using “Jehovah” as did many others, including some who translated the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible.

Isa. 40, 3-5

1.  All God’s mercies are conditioned.  Necessarily is it so & a great blessing it is.

2.  So it is in the text.  The King of earth and heaven would visit his people and bestow rich blessings upon them.  But there are conditions to be met ere He come and we can profit by His coming.  We are in a desert and need to cast up a highway for our God.

(1)  Indifference a great mountain that must be removed.  God can’t help those who have no interest in divine things.

(2)  Doubt is a deep valley that must be filled.  Unbelief is sin.  God is hampered by it (Matt. 13, 58).  Doubt and distrust such a God as He?

(3)  Sin the great mountain in the way.  It must be repented of, forsaken, gotten from between the soul and God.

3.  Then He will come to Zion and bless her with the riches of His grace.  He ever thus responds to such a turning to Him.

Will we meet the conditions or will we block the way?

EDITOR’S NOTE:

My great-grandfather used the term “Jehovah,” a Medieval creation.  The best English-language translation of the Tetragammaton with vowels is “Yahweh.”  His error was consistent with the time and the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible.

Job 38, 1

Job had resented the charge of his three friend.  Their contention was so great that when Jehovah would speak a demonstration is needed to arrest attention, and to impress their minds with his power.  Then Job humbled himself and confessed his mistake.

1.  Jehovah would speak to us to impart a knowledge of himself.  Wonderful is his condescension.  We need light & strength for our troubled weak hearts.

2.  But he finds difficulties in the way.  The mind is so engrossed with other matters, it often requires some demonstration to call us to ourselves. “Be still and know that I am God” as one viewing some scene of nature’s grandeur.  “Enter into thy closet” and pray; shut out the world else though the voice speak you may not hear it.  The Indian’s ear to the ground is on point.

3.  Then the needed effect comes, strife ceases, with the knowledge of God.  This vision of Jehovah is essential to repentance, faith, and obedience.  “The Father rewards openly.”

4.  If we will habitually commune with him, shutting out the world, to speak out of some whirlwind will not be necessary.  Why not live so as to catch the softest whisper of His love?

EDITOR’S NOTE:

The name “Jehovah” is , of course, a Medieval creation.  The correct English-language version of the Tetragammaton with vowels is “Yahweh.”  Yet my great-grandfather used “Jehovah.”  This error was consistent with his time (a century ago) and the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible.

Num. 10, 29

1.  We are traveling to the heavenly Canaan, have been delivered from bondage to sin, are united in one Christian brotherhood, having the pillar of cloud & fire as our guide & protector.  We are kept by His power.

2.  Our Lord Jehovah has promised to bring us to that goodly land.  By faith we anticipate the day when we shall see the King in His beauty.  His promise is our surety that it shall be.

3.  “Come thou with us.”  We would have one and all go with us.  Leave your folly and neglect all behind.  Come walk with us towards that goodly country and associate with the people of God.  Choose today the narrow way that leadeth upward every day.

4.  “We will do thee good.”  We promise you helpful fellowship in Christ.  We will try to help when you need it.  Will also give you opportunity to do good & thus be happier.  Seek the help the church supplies, “her sweet communion, solemn vows,” etc.

5.  For Jehovah hath spoken good concerning Israel.”  All His promises are to His followers and not one shall fail.

We want you; come!
